Many large name brand companies use proprietary blends and grading systems that do not clearly state the actual fur content. That can make it difficult to know the true quality of what you are buying.

Midweight felt is slightly lighter and more flexible. It is comfortable for everyday wear, travels well, and works great for a variety of crown and brim shapes. Many people choose midweight for its balance of structure and ease, especially if they want a versatile hat they can wear year round.

Western weight felt is heavier and denser. It has a firmer hand, holds a strong shape, and stands up exceptionally well to wind, weather, and hard use. This weight is ideal for more traditional Western styles, larger brims, and anyone who wants maximum durability and structure.

Both are quality options. The right choice depends on how you plan to wear your hat and the look and feel you prefer.

Each hat is carefully crafted through a detailed, hands on process that simply cannot be rushed. The felt must be properly formed and shaped, then blocked to size, dried, sanded, and refined for a smooth finish. The brim is cut and shaped, the crown is hand formed, and all trim and details are added with precision.

In our shop, we focus on legacy hats inspired by the American West. That means honoring traditional techniques and time tested craftsmanship rather than taking shortcuts. Many steps require proper drying and setting time to ensure the hat holds its shape and stands up to years of wear.

Wool hats can be a good budget option, but they generally do not perform or last as well as beaver or rabbit felt.
